EUGENE, Ore. – Emma Eddy finally scored a goal in an Oregon uniform and goalkeeper Katelyn Carter used every inch of her 5-10 frame to make that goal stand up.
Eddy, a prolific scorer first at Eugene's Sheldon High School and later at the University of Idaho, finally found the net as a Duck and her goal in the 52nd minute lifted Oregon to a 1-0 victory over Mexico's U20 National Team Saturday at Pape' Field.
The Ducks end the spring exhibition season with a 4-0-1 record.
How it Happened: Both teams played a conservative first half that ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Ducks then opened things up from the whistle to start the second half, firing three shots at Mexico's goal before Eddy's score.
Eddy, who transferred to Oregon after her freshman season at Idaho, intercepted a pass in Mexico's third and wove her way through traffic to the right side of the net, where she daftly clipped the ball around Mexico goalie Miriam Aquirre into the far side of the net.
Mexico pressed hard for the equalizer the final 30 minutes of the match forcing Carter to make three saves, the biggest of which came in the 85th minute. Mexico forward Andrea Hernandez sent a high line drive toward Oregon's goal from the left side, but Carter leapt up and just got a knuckle on the ball to deflect it safely over the crossbar and the Ducks ran out the clock from there.
Game Notes: The Pape' Field stands were packed with an estimated crowd of 1,000, many of whom came out to support the Mexican National Team … Oregon outshot Mexico 15-10 … Eddy was the seventh different Duck to score a goal this spring … The Ducks had an excellent chance for an insurance goal on a terrific ball up the left side from Nicole Seaman that Bayley Bruner ran on to and centered to Jessica Yu right in front of the goal, by Yu just missed the frame on a one-timer … Forward Taylor Kuroda will redshirt the 2018 season after suffering a knee injury in the Western Oregon match.
What it Means: Oregon's 4-0-1 spring record included wins over Mexico, Oregon State, Portland State and Western Oregon, which should build a lot of momentum going into the fall for a squad looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Quotable:
Katelyn Carter, on her game-preserving save:
"Honestly, my training just kicked in. I was very happy to be in the game and to be able to make saves for my teammates."
